The castle became a detention camp for allied officers from 1939-1945 who had made previous escapes or were otherwise deemed worthy of being closely confined. From here attempts to escape continued and became a way of life.
Out of a 120 attempts of British detainees 11 escaped and 109 tried in vain! Probably too many tea breaks during the escape! Nothing better than a cup of PG Tips!
